Gear Backlash Guide
Backlash is the amount of clearance between mating gear teeth. While often perceived as a problem, backlash is actually necessary for proper gear operation — it provides space for lubrication and accommodates thermal expansion and manufacturing tolerances.
Why Backlash Is Required
Without backlash, gears would bind when temperatures rise or when manufacturing tolerances stack unfavorably. Even precision gears require a small amount of backlash to operate reliably.
Typical Backlash Values
Standard backlash is typically 0.05m to 0.15m, where m is the module. For Module 2 gears, this means 0.1mm to 0.3mm of backlash at the pitch circle.
Minimizing Backlash for Precision Applications
In CNC, robotics, and precision positioning applications, backlash must be minimized. Methods include: using anti-backlash gear pairs, adjustable center distance mounts, spring-loaded split gears, and specifying tighter JIS tolerance grades (N5–N7).
Measuring Backlash
Backlash is measured by holding one gear fixed and rocking the mating gear. The angular movement at the pitch circle equals the linear backlash. Dial indicators mounted at the pitch radius provide accurate measurements.
